Kazuo Kiriyama is placed within the game to 'stir things up', to make things more interesting. He signed up on his own accord to be given the chance to kill innocent people. Kawada states 'He signed up for fun'. Because of this we can tell he is maniacal and homicidal. Due to his uncaring nature during the early segments of the film one can assume he has taken part in a BR act before or at least knows about it in detail. These are both unconfirmed facts.

In the movie Kiriyama begins as a mystery and ends as a mystery. Since he was not from the same school as the rest of the contestants and did not know Kawada beforehand no one knows anything about him and thus can not relay any information to the viewers. Kazuo also doesn't help to shed light on his past which makes sense since the character seems secluded, isolated and interested only in what passes through his own mind rather than what's going on around him.

Kazuo is bloodthirsty and can be classified as the enigmatic villain of Battle Royale. It is also suggested that he is mute since he does not speak even once within the movie nor make much of a sound except for when holding a megaphone after killing two girls on a mountaintop.

He does not seem to be a professional fighter and though he can operate a gun and holds an air of grace when weilding a sword he can sometimes be radical and unpredictable. One can assume he had no training in the art of fighting a battle yet picked up on it and learnt as he went along. This shows a stroke of genius and skill that goes beyond the meer ability to gain grace after practicing for years of your life.

Overall his uncaring, brutal nature and strange attitude towards death and killing creates a character which is intriguing and wonderful.
