Book VS Movie: Introduction
The following sections are based on my own perceptions of Kiriyama as a character that I gained from the book and movie publications. None of the views expressed are official in anyway.I do however want to make it clear that though I am comparing the Book to the Movie and wrote up seperate sections of the site for them I am not treating it like different characters. Kiriyama is BOTH the book and movie version. It is true they are fairly different but this is simply because we get to see different views of the character and many fans can not say that about movie/book conversions.
Kiriyama was not so much changed as different parts of his personality were emphasised. The book is very focused on Kazuo's background and past. It explains why he is the way he is and includes relationships between him and his classmates. The movie however was not able to portray either of these things so instead we got to concentrate on the side of people you don't usually see. That silent part at the back of their mind. Without the backstory and relationships to hide it Kiriyamas true personality shines. You don't need to be told he is amazing and a genius, you can see it from the very way he acts, moves and plays the game.
To reiterate: I am in no means treating the two versions as different characters and hope that no one visiting this site does that. In order to truly understand Kiriyama you need to combine the versions together rather than keep them seperated. (The sections of the site were pulled apart so that things would just be neater) Remember that and we'll all be on the same page.
