Book: An Injury
The thing that possibly makes Kiriyama so incredibly interesting is the fact that he feels no emotion, no pity and no guilt over anything that has happened in his life. Because of this Kazuo is cold, calm and unmoved by any situation that passes him by.
This amazing part of his character is thanks to an injury that happened while he was still in the womb that almost killed the boy. The accident is never explained in detail but we do know that it resulted in Kazuo's mothers death as well as a splinter to be lodged in his brain in an incredibly dangerous position just behind his left temple.
A doctor operated on Kiriyama when he was a baby and removed the splinter stating that the surgery was a complete success and the boy would end up living an ordinary life. The doctor and Kazuo's father never knew that a cluster of fine nerves was destroyed thanks to the infliction to his brain which affected his ability to feel emotion.
To this day Kiriyama still feels a strange sensation in the area where the splinter entered his head. Thanks to the fact both the doctor who operated on him and his father had died the boy never had the chance to discover what this feeling meant and from all the teachings in the world never found an answer.
The continuous numbness and ability to feel nothing was normal for Kazuo as he knew no differently but at the same time he seems completely unaware of the fact he does not actually feel any emotion like an uninjured human being. His reactions to situations are all the more interesting because of this.
Kazuo does things simply cause he feels like it with no fear and does not care about any of the things he has accomplished whether it be a piece of art that is beautiful beyond comprehension (which was thrown in the trash by Kiriyama himself) or slaughtering his friends and classmates.
