Book: The Kiriyama Family
Kazuo Kiriyama's gang is affectionately (or not so much..) known as the Kiriyama Family and consists of four members of Class B aside from the main man himself. These students were Mitsuru Numai, Ryuhei Sasagawa, Sho Tsukioka and Hiroshi Kuronaga. Most of the Family idolised and respected their leader Kiriyama by calling him 'boss' or even 'king' (though never the latter to his face it would seem) but Sho always seemed to be unwilling to take this step and though he always showed respect to Kazuo by refering to him as 'Kazuo-kun' he never stooped to calling him Boss.
The Kiriyama Family was viewed by many including Nanahara as incredibly tight and a force to be reckoned with. In short they were a gang, not so much thugs but completely capable of doing violent and mischeivous things. Though ever since Kazuo joined and created the gang none of the members had been arrested, his wit and brains kept them all out of jail yet always sticking it to the government and society. Numai seemed concerned in the early stages of the gang that these kindof actions could aid towards ruining Kazuo's chances at a good and proper life the only reply he ever got however was 'I don't care, this is fun too.'
After Kiriyama the next in order of power would have to be Numai who viewed himself as the loyal advisor and creator of Kazuo. Mitsuru not only viewed the group as a gang of 'thugs' but truly a family that would always look out for one another and never turn or faulter, this of course was what resulted in his, Ryuhei's and Hiroshi's downfall. Sho was not quite as trusting of their relationship once entering the game though.
Within the game Kazuo's ruthless nature is shown through the fact he was the cause of death for all members of the Kiriyama Family. Originally he arranges for them to join up on the southern tip of the island by passing notes during the explanation of the BR act. Once they arrive Ryuhei and Hiroshi have their throats slit and Numai, after hearing Kazuo's explanation of why he has turned on them, is shot down by four bullets to the torso. Sho is use to betrayal and therefore hangs back and is not caught in this initial slaughter but is later tricked into entering a forbidden zone. Seven seconds past five.
The Kiriyama family is an important part of the story when analysing Kazuo. It is because of them that we can truly understand the depth at which Kiriyama was affected by the splinter in his brain. When most people would have formed the bonds of friendship within such a close group Kiriyama feels nothing. The idea of killing his 'friends' doesn't bother him in the least and even though he would probably have been able to save them all left it to the toss of a coin to decide.
While the members of the gang felt such respect and admiration for him Kiriyama felt absolutely nothing in return.
